Sustainability

A small, passionate team of perfectionists works at Nusarah. Our roots are in the Netherlands, a country where caring for people and the environment has been central for generations.

Day in and day out, we are committed to creating the most beautiful mosquito nets, hammocks and other accessories. We strive to continuously develop and improve our products, material choices, sustainable production methods and working methods.

‘Nusarah was founded in 2024. Every day, we put sustainability back at the top of the agenda.’ – Patricia, Head of Design

Durable Quality

The mosquito net industry, especially polyester mosquito nets, has a significant impact on the environment. That is why we are committed to bringing to market a product that is both better and more sustainable.

Sustainability is in our DNA. We make carefully designed high-quality mosquito nets, hammocks and other accessories, meant to last and not be replaced after just one year. Nusarah deliberately opts for small production batches rather than mass production. We keep our stock manageable and limit the number of designs, which prevents waste. At Nusarah, unsold mosquito nets are never thrown away; we end up donating them to charity.

Our designs are timeless and of durable quality, so you can enjoy your purchased Nusarah product to the fullest.

Bali’s Craftsmanship: timeless quality from its own workshop

Most of Nusarah mosquito nets are handcrafted in our Atelier in Bali, where time stands still. We chose Bali for the artisans’ love for their craft which is evident at every stage of production – from the cutting team to the seamstresses, from the packaging crew to the quality controllers.

Our partners are mostly small family run businesses who share our passion for excellence and take great pride in their work. These talented artisans put all the elements together to create the Nusarah bed canopies’ enduring quality and style. We build long term relationships and even during the pandemic we have continued to work with the same manufacturers we started with and also launched our own Atelier.

Choosing the right fabric

Finding appropriate fabrics has been a pivotal initial step in our quest for a more sustainable industry. Sourcing cotton and silk is relatively straightforward compared to polyester. Since polyester is inherently synthetic, our polyester nets—despite coming from certified companies (BSCI/ISO9001)—are not as biodegradable as our cotton mosquito nets.

We are constantly seeking ways to enhance our processes and reduce our ecological impact on this beautiful planet. We achieve this through various initiatives, such as:
a) Collaborating with suppliers who align with our values regarding environmental and social responsibility;
b) Partnering exclusively with shipping companies that are part of the ‘Getting to Zero Coalition’ initiative, which aims for zero carbon emissions from shipping and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030;
c) Establishing the Nusarah Forest, where we plant a tree for every order placed.

Additionally, we strive to minimize or eliminate the use of chemicals in our production process, which is why over 95% of our mosquito nets feature an off-white, natural hue.

Small steps make big differences

Nusarah bed canopies are designed with a commitment to minimizing plastic usage. This is reflected in our choice of packaging, as we use cotton bags for our mosquito nets. Even the small pouch that holds screws, wall plugs, and cords for mounting is crafted from cotton. Additionally, we ensure that all our packaging, hang tags, and printed materials are made from recycled or partially recycled materials, reinforcing our dedication to sustainability.

Our realistic view: minimise waste

Nusarah is committed to exploring methods for producing polyester nets from plastic waste. While we don’t yet offer a fully eco-friendly polyester option, we are working towards introducing a portion of our polyester collection made from recycled plastic by 2025.

We are continuously seeking innovative strategies to minimize waste, striving towards the ultimate goal of achieving zero waste in our production process.
